Alan Meyburgh

Sculptor Alan Meyburgh, who resides in Dubai, has spent most of his life in the outdoors following his passion for photography, fly-fishing, bird-watching, wildlife, trekking and various outdoor sports. These activities are his inspiration and the essence of his sculptures.

Though born into a family of artists, Alan’s love for wildlife actually saw him start his professional career in game ranching, where he spent four years. A regular contributor to South Africa’s premier fly-fishing magazine The Complete Fly Fisherman Meyburgh has also been featured in a number of publications and has appeared on television and radio for his work.

Alan first became interested in sculpture with the creation of a portrait of his own pointer (dog). The results lead him to investigate further, and he draws inspiration from the challenges that each new work brings. A versatile and accomplished sculptor, Alan’s skill has won him a number of commissions, both private and corporate in bronze, silver and ceramic. His work combines realism and stylization that focuses on the form of his subjects

Recent works move alongside natural realism to something more contemporary and abstract. This innovative and versatile artist places emphasis on form, structure and expression of movement. Wile designing new works he is ever mindful of positive and negative space, colour and light, texture, and of course the meaning of each of his pieces. His sculptural studies (sketches) are regularly exhibited alongside these works.

These works have led to collaboration with a number of companies as well as individuals, and include Saatchi & Saatchi, Red Bull Air Races in Abu Dhabi, Al Maha Desert Resort, Mr. Jan Bladen (commission for Horse Polo bronze), Nissan - Arabian Automobiles, Mr. C. Gross (Sharjah Breeding Centre), Shell Petroleum Company SA, SASOL Oil, Nesbank SA, Mall of the Emirates - Ski Dubai. A celebrated animalier, Meyburgh has completed a number of acclaimed personal and animal portraits, each expressing the true character of the subject.

Alan’s has spent many years teaching fly-fishing therefore it was only a matter of time before he started teaching sculpture. The Dubai International Art Centre has been in existence for more than three decades and serves as a platform for Alan to share in his knowledge as a sculptor.
