Training Tips
For anyone that is thinking about entering into the Shamaal Challenge in Dubai at the end of November, here are a few tips to get you started.
- Allow yourself 3 months to get ready for the event. We will be starting a training program at the beginning of September with the Dubai Paddling School to get paddlers in shape for the event.
More on the specific training program later. - If you are not planning on doing too much racing in July and August then now is a good time to build up your strength and base fitness. Strength can be improved by starting a weights program (your local gym can help you out here) and doing some resistance work in the surf ski. For example tie a rope around your ski in front of your feet – this will break up the flow of water and increase the drag on the boat. By slowing down your rating and concentrating on technique your strength on the stroke will increase.
- Try some cross training exercises such as swimming, running or cycling to build a good aerobic base for the upcoming season.
- By increasing your strength and aerobic base, your performance in the boat will certainly improve.
- Wherever you are training remember there are always paddlers around that have entered similar events and will have a wealth of experience to pass on.
Keep posted for more information on the event.
