Calling on Volunteers
As the race gathers momentum from our inaugural Dubai Shamaal race, so has the support and desire to get involved by our community!Volunteers are a key component to the success of our race and we would not be able to do this without your valuable help.
We estimate that around 30 volunteers will be needed over the race weekend hence our appeal for help. The following is an outline of those areas where help is needed.
To make the experience as fun as possible, we will arrange for volunteer briefings for most activities prior to the race. These will be held at different times to suit individuals schedules and volunteers are encouraged to attend. Timings of briefings will be published later.
HOSTING
With a growing interest from paddlers worldwide to come race in the Dubai Shamaal and given the time of year with the Rugby 7’s, the World Powerboating to mention but a few, accommodation will be at a premium. Last year many of our local families opened their homes to our visitors. Usually this is an offer of a bed or 2 for a few days. The athletes do not expect to be fed, they exist on their "unique" diets! If you are willing to volunteer your home, please email johann.botha@murrob.ae
RACE REGISTRATION
Volunteers are needed to work shifts during race registration. Shifts timings and locations will be provided later.
BODY MARKING
Each paddler is required to have race numbers "inked" on to their arms and thighs! This is known as "body marking". Shift timings will be provided later (coffee is available) and is a fun time for all of our volunteers!
BOAT SAFETY AND COURSE MARSHALS
During the 25km race, as many volunteers as possible are needed on boats, small craft or jet skis to monitor the paddlers. Timings will be confirmed later.
BRANDINGVolunteers are required to help with setting up of the start, finish, prize giving and general periphery branding. This normally takes place on the two days leading upto race day. We need to ensure that our sponsors are also happy. Dismantling and safe keeping of the branding will also need attention the day following the race.
RACE START ARENA
There are a number of tasks required in the race arena including the setup, someone to take care of the Race Briefing, Race Course and Safety Rules & Regulations, race starter, time keepers, directing paddlers as they move in and out, ensuring stickers are placed correctly on each and every ski, watering ‘hole’ and so on. Timing will follow later.
The finish line is a hive of activity once the race nears a close. Volunteers are needed to "catch" paddlers as they finish, ensure their times are taken down correctly and ski’s are moved out of the way. Another important factor is to monitor them to ensure that no medical attention is required. This is one of the most critical tasks and many pairs of hands are needed, especially with the small area and number of paddlers expected to cross the line.
PRIZE GIVING
Volunteers are required to setup the prize giving podium, ensure sponsor branding is in place and ensure that all certificates, medals, trophies, mock cheque and prize money are ready and PA system is setup. They will also be responsible for compilation of the results and final lists to the presenters of the awards.
PHOTOGRAPHERS
Anyone who is competent with a camera is welcome to take photographs which will also be for the use of the Race Organisers and DSKC. Distribution of these images will be at their discretion.
MEDIA
This is a vital role and will encompass images and results being sent to a database that will be provided to you. This needs to be done within one (1) hour of the race finish. The Dubai Shamaal website will also need to be updated. Driving Force will provide the web developer and coder for this. Volunteers will also liaise with the international and local production crews.
